James 5:1-5
“You rich people should cry and weep. Terrible things are going to happen to you!”
WORDS OF HOPE
Prepare yourself by remembering that you are in the Presence of God taking a deep breath - breathing in goodness and light and then exhale slowly ridding yourself of personal concerns and troubles and distractions. And then do it all again calming your thoughts, clearing your mind in order to be able to listen better to your God.
At first glance, the words from the letter of James and the words that follow are able to turn your blood into ice water! You may suggest that the word “rich” is subjective and therefore you can “prove” that you are NOT rich as compared to others you know. But, I believe that you already know in your hearts two things: 1) whether or not you may be rich by any normative definition, and 2) how you have related to your riches especially as it relates to those who are considered poor. Look into your personal mirror and see what is reflected to you. Is the truth something that you would want to make public?
My reflection over many years is that it is easier for the young to fall into the pit of justification for “financial success” while negating those other experiences and relationships that are far more important in one’s life as “riches.” These riches are far more significant in the short and long term. And these riches are not corrosive or the sort of items that will hold us condemned at the final judgement.
PRAYER
O Holy One! Help us to be mindful of “riches” in our lives to determine those that are truly from your generosity. Help us to remember that our “worth” in your eyes is not determined by what is rich by the values of the world.
We make this prayer in your many names, O God! AMEN!
