Understanding Religious Trauma: Healing and Hope | 05-05-25 to 05-19-25
Mondays, May 5 - May 19, 2025, 7pm - 8:30pm | Fellowship Hall
Explore the profound intersection of faith and mental health in "Understanding Religious Trauma: Healing and Hope in Faith Communities." This course delves into the complexities of religious trauma—defined as adverse experiences within religious contexts that disrupt physical, emotional, or spiritual well-being.
Through expert insights from the Religious Trauma Institute and voices like Jayne McConnuaghey’s Trauma in the Pews, we’ll examine how fundamentalist beliefs, spiritual abuse, and well-intentioned practices (e.g., forced repentance, shaming teachings) can exacerbate trauma.
Participants will analyze how trauma impacts spiritual disciplines like prayer, worship, and confession, and learn to distinguish harmful theological narratives from compassionate, healing approaches. Designed for survivors, caregivers, ministry leaders, and anyone seeking to foster safer faith spaces, this class combines research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), self-regulation behaviors, and trauma-informed care.
Join us to uncover strategies for rebuilding trust, addressing shame, and creating communities where healing thrives. Sign up to transform understanding into action—because everyone deserves a faith that nurtures, not wounds.

Several times a year, we gather to create blessing bags for our neighbors in need. We’ll provide the items. You provide the people power. All ages welcome! You can pick up Blessing Bags to distributed on designated Blessing Bag Sundays or by calling the church office.
