SCRIPTURE
James 5.7-8
Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.
WORDS OF HOPE
Patience is “the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.” I sat down to write on this passage after spending an afternoon with a friend working on a quilt block that was definitely a test of my patience (and my skill). I had to rip several seams and re-do them because they were a tiny fraction too big, making the pieces of the puzzle not fit together. I had issues with the tension on my sewing machine. And I had to use construction techniques that were unfamiliar and uncomfortable to me. Any one of these “troubles” could have caused me much frustration. At a different time in my life, all of this would have caused me too much frustration and likely led me to bail on the project. On this day, however, patience prevailed. I did not get upset or angry. I did what I knew I needed to do to be happy with the end result even though that meant ripping things out and trying again…and again.
Patience is not something that we get much practice with these days. Food can be delivered to our door in far less time than it would take for us to make it ourselves, next day delivery is available on almost anything that we might need or want, and customer support for many things is available 24/7 via online chat. Even with these things, we all need patience in our daily lives. Traffic, long lines, irritating people, circumstances beyond our control require patience.
I try to think of patience as a spiritual discipline, a means by which I can be drawn closer to God. In those times where frustration could easily become the response, we can try instead to thank God for that moment. Pray for calm. Pray for a sense of peace. Hand over any inkling of frustration to God. Repeat the words of Julian of Norwich, “All shall be well.” Remember that some things take time, perhaps lots of time. They happen in God’s time, kairos, not ours.
PRAYER
Dear God, in those moments when I am overwhelmed with frustration guide me toward patience. Remind me that you are with me in the delays, struggles, and suffering. Settle my heart and mind so that I can focus on the gift of the present moment. Amen
