SCRIPTURE
Matthew 6.25
“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
WORDS OF HOPE
In these turbulent times, even a quick glance at the news can make us feel we are at war, not with another country, but with each other. So many of our fellow citizens often express what seem to be irreconcilable differences. We can sometimes imagine ourselves not in the comfort of our homes, but in the trenches.
The young French Jesuit priest and scientist, Teilhard de Chardin, served in the trenches of World War I as a stretcher bearer. The filth, bloody death and loss which surrounded him were overwhelming. He struggled with his physical and spiritual life and its future in midst of those unending and uncertain times. His struggles were later documented in a volume of his writings titled War Front Letters.
Writing to his cousin, he expressed some thoughts which are pearls of wisdom even for us today. "I feel at this moment that my uncertain future is yawning before me. I realize that now is the time when I must choose how I should direct my efforts, but I can’t see clearly what that is. This is the time to trust God, strengthen my faith and pray with listening to God's voice. I must remember that the uncertain road of life ahead will become more plain as both Christ and I, together, advance day by day." (February 19, 1919)
In an earlier letter (October 7, 1915) he wrote: "We must offer our uncertain existence to God who neither wastes nor spoils anything, but rather makes better use of our experience than we could ever anticipate."
To Chardrin, it was all about our sincere trust in God's involvement in our life, the one reality that does not change, does not disappoint. He felt Christ’s presence beside him on every step of what would have been an impossible journey.
In the early years of the last century, the poet Louisa Stead put it this way. May this be our
PRAYER:
"Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take him at his word,
just to rest upon his promise, just to know "thus saith the Lord."
I'm so glad I learned to trust you, precious Jesus, Savior, friend,
and I know that you are with me,
will be with me to the end." (Louisa Stead 1850-1917)
