SCRIPTURE
Exodus 33. 1-6
The Lord spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up from the land of Egypt… to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, because you are an obstinate people, and I might destroy you on the way.”
When the people heard this sad word, they went into mourning… So the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.
WORDS OF HOPE
Years ago, I produced an animated Christian education film for a denomination whose national office is based in another State. It was not a pleasant experience. The client was very specific about what he wanted to see, and we often went through several stages of approval for every element of production. At the end, the product was delivered exactly as he ordered it, but it was still not to his satisfaction. We later heard that the film was well received by the denomination and brought a sizable amount of funds to the national office. The good news was never communicated to us by the client. The main character of the film was a little girl who could never stop whining.
Have you ever been acquainted with anyone who could never stop whining? Today’s scripture reading reminds us that this is not a current phenomenon. Moses, along with his sister Miriam and his brother Aaron, had to endure the whines of a whole nation going on 40 years when God finally announced that their journey was about to come to a close as God was to make good the promise of deliverance into the Land of Milk and Honey. However, God’s presence would not be accompanying them.
God knew they would whine about it and was sending along an angel to keep things in order, but experience had taught that this reaction was inevitable. Throughout the Exodus, they had whined about God’s gifts of food, guidance, choice of leadership, and even had whined that they would rather have remained slaves in Egypt instead of following the path of freedom.
In protest, the people were stripping off their ornaments forever as reminders of how mistreated they were. The last time they had staged such a tantrum, they had melted down their ornaments to build a Golden Calf in direct blasphemous encroachment on God’s authority.
God confines in Moses that there would be no divine presence on this final journey for their own protection, the perfect example of how to deal with whiners. Remember their bad example but leave them to whine on their own.
