SCRIPTURE
Mark 13:21-23
And if anyone says to you at that time, ‘Look! Here is the Messiah!’ or ‘Look! There he is!’—do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But be alert; I have already told you everything.
WORDS OF HOPE
“False prophets” was a theme in Jesus time. Everyone was looking for someone to save them from the oppression of Rome and according to history a lot of people stepped up and made proclamations of their being “the one”.
It’s still happening today. They might not be false messiahs offering eternal life, but there are plenty of hucksters with sure fire ways to look better, cure maladies, get rich quick and otherwise game the system. Lots of religious folks as well do the same thing. Many offer prosperity, salvation and happiness and usually for a hefty price. Everyone is looking for that “get into heaven free” card like life is some sort of giant Monopoly game.
Seems we are always looking for saviors whether in our personal lives or our country’s life. Finding messiahs is a convenient way of sidestepping responsibility. Jesus tells us life is hard, but He gives us tools to make it better.
Jesus lived a life that was turned outward. He was not content to just pray and meditate, he put his faith into action and so should we.
PRAYER
Loving God, may I seek to follow Jesus and bring about the heaven on earth He spoke of. May we follow in His footsteps and feed the hungry, heal the sick, visit the captives and love everyone as our neighbor.
Amen
