SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 54.10
Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.
WORDS OF HOPE
I’ve been drawing a lot of coloring books in the last few months, seven of them to be exact, with eighty-four illustrations each. The themes are basically based on what I have been teaching children most of my life: Love of the natural world, the joys of friendship, acts of compassion, celebration of diversity. They are all based on the philosophy of Jesus, whether his name is mentioned or not. Pictures of hope.
Since the election, many of my friends on social media have not been quite as positive. I can certainly understand their positions and the cleansing process of expressing their feelings. I do not disagree with them.
I have a good friend who recently shared an article by a Harvard professor which was meant to be a “wake-up call” for progressive thinkers. The thesis was basically about the irreversible trend toward becoming a permanent culture of lies and hate. More like a “go back to bed and cover your head” call. Every generation has its prophets of doom who base their declarations on old guard philosophies.
His is a no-win scenario for our generation. We created it, but luckily our generation will not be solving it either. I know far too many young people who think beyond the walls of Harvard who will not be phased by this. I have faith in a better future through them. The one bright note in the article is his recognition of the power of the arts to change minds.
You and I know that’s true. We’ve read the books, seen the movies, heard the music, and admired the paintings that have changed and directed our lives. And we’ve trusted in the love of God that inspired all of it. There is no variable including the initiative of God in the professor’s visions of a doomed future.
My optimism lies in the divinely gifted possibilities the arts have and have always had in the hands of the young. Especially in their new instant global communication world. As for me, I’ll get back to drawing subversive coloring books to plant a few more seeds of empathy and social justice in their minds.
PRAYER
There are those among us who feel our mountains have been shaken, but we know in our hearts that your unfailing love for all and your covenant of peace will never fail. Amen
