SCRIPTURE
Hebrews 10:32-36 (New International Version)
Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.
You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what God has promised.
WORDS OF HOPE
One of the most effective ways to engage with the Bible is to put ourselves in the place of the characters in the story—not just the “good” characters, but also the seemingly “not-so-good” ones as well. We can benefit from seeing the same scenario from different perspectives both in our reading of Scripture and in the situations in which we find ourselves each day. The writer of the above passage from Hebrews is trying to help us to understand and respond in a healthy way when life looks not-so-good” from our perspective.
I was one who felt that I was enduring great conflict and suffering after the presidential election. It did not go as I had hoped. After about twenty-four hours of not quite knowing how to respond, I realized that I had to “not throw away my confidence” and believe that in God’s time I “will be richly rewarded.” To help me get to that point, I decided that I would text a friend who was on the happy side of the election, and who I know to be strong in her Catholic faith, to ask her to help me to understand. It took several days, but she did respond in a kind way.
She admittedly did not answer some very pointed questions that I asked, but she did explain why she made the choices that she did. Though I most certainly did not agree with any of her reasoning, I realized after reading her response that we both want many of the same things for our lives and the lives of those we love, but we see a very different path to achieving them. Not surprisingly, there are also several important-to-me issues on which we strongly disagree. Our differing thoughts on issues, however, are not my point here.
The final paragraph in her response is what was most helpful and hopeful to me. “It will probably be a long four years for you. Believe me when I say that I feel your pain. It’s terrible. I’ve been there.” Though we all feel pain over different things and that pain may be more severe for some, she is right. She has just spent the last four years feeling the same way that many of us do right now.
Don’t get me wrong, I am still shocked, angry, and terrified, but I do have insight into a perspective that is diametrically opposed to my own, which was my only goal in initiating this conversation. What we must all do now is “persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
Though the stakes and their consequences may have changed in the past few weeks, our job today is no different than it ever has been. We must act justly, love mercy, and continue to walk humbly with our God. As I read in an article recently, ”Nothing is preventing us from doing this and nothing is exempting us from doing this.” Our call and obligation to do the difficult work—to fight for justice, freedom, and peace for all—is still before us.
“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
PRAYER
Loving God, governor of all that is true and right and beautiful, comfort and guide us in times of fear and hopelessness. Help us to remain confident in your promise to us that with perseverance in doing the work you have set before us, we will receive your reward and live in your goodness. Amen.
