John 16:21-22
When a woman is in labor, she has pain because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. So you have pain now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
WORDS OF HOPE
I was raised in a Jewish household and in the Jewish faith. I suspect it has really helped me understand Jesus better since, after all, he was a Jew. This passage reminds me of a saying my relatives used to use when giving condolences for someone who died. They would say, “May their memory be a blessing.”
I have a lot of those people still living in my memory. One, in particular, is my aunt Margarette. She was a wonderful loving woman who was always ready to cook a meal, bake special treats and offer a listening ear if I had a problem. She delighted in helping me whenever I needed it. She was an awesome seamstress and often made costumes for me at Halloween. She was so good that when I eventually started my own business creating shows for theme parks and attractions, she was our first employee. She sewed countless costumes for our shows and for the costumed characters that served as park’s mascots.
Long after she has gone, I still look at photos of those characters and see and hear her making comments about how to tailor the fabric better, how to get the right expression on the characters face with a few more stitches in just the right place.
Her memory was a blessing to me and thousands of people who visited the parks and delighted in her work even if they never knew her.
After the sorrow and pain of mourning is over, the memory lives on. That memory can be every bit as alive as if that person was still standing with us, speaking to us, guiding us, encouraging us. Our hearts rejoice in their existence in our lives and no one can take that joy from us.
PRAYER
May the memories of those we love remain with us for the rest of our lives and may we live lives that will become a blessed memory for those we love.
In the blessed memory of Jesus who lives in us,
Amen.
