WORDS OF HOPE
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month
The Return of the Son
For years I battled alone, silently, and to my own detriment, void of a personal relationship with God. Why, you may be wondering? I think for the same reasons many of us do – to hide our shame. And it’s so heartbreaking because we intuitively understand that, at some point, everyone feels this way. Even Jesus struggled with His mental health in the face of what awaited Him on the cross, for His sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood. Yet, He wasn’t ashamed – for God was with Him.
Does it make sense to hide our pain from a loving and compassionate Creator who sees what lies beneath the deep and in the shadows of the unknown? Let us consider, for a moment, our worth to God by remembering the story of the prodigal son and his father. He took his family’s wealth and wasted it on ‘wild living.’ Alone, silently, and without the assistance of his father he found himself working in the fields feeding pigs that were better off than he was.
But when he remembered his father, he realized that all hope was not lost and returned home – probably feeling ashamed, too. Then, before the son could even reach the front door, the father ran to meet him, embraced him, and celebrated his return.
There is more waiting for you than you realize. There is love; there is compassion, healing, joy, and so much more. Like the prodigal son and the divine Son of God, we too, mustn’t struggle alone, silently, and without help from our Father. Nor should we ever feel ashamed for needing it.
PRAYER
Abba God,
We come to you with our anxiety, depression, and brokenness. Our wounds are exposed. We need you. Where there is shame, give us courage. Where there is weakness, give us strength. And where there is loneliness, give us love. Mend the pieces of our souls and dwell within us. Bless You, for your love, grace, and acceptance. Amen.
