John 15: 9-13
As God has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Abba’s commands and remain in God’s love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
WORDS OF HOPE
There are many ways of reading or hearing Holy Scripture. One way is to imagine yourself in the setting you are reading about. Today’s reading, which is still in the spirit of Eastertide, is such a sample. Prepare by placing yourself in the Presence of God taking a deep breath, breathing in goodness and light and then exhale slowly ridding yourself of personal concerns and troubles. And then do it all again calming your thoughts, clearing your mind to be able to listen better to God..
The setting of this Scripture is a Passover meal with Jesus and the Disciples. Imagine yourself in that room. Your eyelids feel heavy and you are dead tired from all the walking you have done these past few days. Your feet ache especially from the long walk yesterday to Jerusalem. It was such a hot day and the roads seemed more dusty than usual due to the lack of rain. The dinner tonight is something you would have preferred to skip except for the fact that it seems very important to Jesus that you and his other friends are all together for the meal.
Jesus seems very anxious to speak to you and the others tonight -- more than he ever has been over the last three years you have been together as a group. You now look on the face of Jesus. He says: “As God has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Abba’s commands and remain in God’s love. I have told you this so that your joy will be complete.”
What is that strange look he has tonight? There is a feeling of finality about this meal, but at the same time you are happy to have been included. Now pause and meditate on those words. Take a deep breath and ask yourself, “How has God the Creator loved Jesus? How has Jesus shown that love to you? How do you show your love to others in order to share that love? Jesus has changed your life. What can you do to change the lives of others? How will this bring joy to their lives?
PRAYER
Help me to understand the words of Jesus as he must have spoken them to his first followers. Give me the enthusiasm and motivation to follow him as if those words were spoken directly to me.
