SCRIPTURE
Ecclesiastes 2:9-13
So, I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom remained with me. Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them; I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure from all my toil, and this was my reward from all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had spent in doing it, and again, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.
So, I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly, for what can the king’s successor do? Only what has already been done. Then I saw that wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness.
WORDS OF HOPE
As the new year begins, I look at my past year and consider what I have accomplished. Being semi-retired I am no longer worried about deadlines and projects and getting things done. Yet I still keep busy, writing and speaking and working…hey! I was supposed to be retired?
I look around my house and see lots of things I collected in my lifetime and each are perhaps valuable, but the memories attached to them are worth much so more. The things are just material goods, but the memories are the real value.
I see a lot of folks who are in powerful positions surrounding themselves with things as well. Private jets, industries, mansions and yet I suspect many of them are paupers when it comes to wisdom and memories. Their pursuit of wealth and power is the folly spoken of by the prophet. They are chasing after the wind.
Perhaps we all are chasing the wind sometimes, and as the new year begins we might take a moment to pause and examine what really matters in our lives. Let us find the wisdom spoken of, and release our grip on the wind.
PRAYER
God of wisdom, grant us vision to appreciate the joys and memories you have given us and let us seek your wisdom in the new year ahead. Amen.
