Matthew 6:2-4
So, whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
WORDS OF HOPE
One of my passions is working with a non-profit in Washington DC. I spend a lot of time not only on the board but helping to raise funds for the organization. I always find it refreshing when we get anonymous gifts. So many of our doners want not only recognition but seek some control over our operations. They remind me of this passage. Their gifts are more about showing how generous they are to friends and colleagues and not about the work of our organization.
Institutions all over the world face this same issue. Doners are quick to give if their names are going to be immortalized on a building or plaque and less generous if there is no opportunity for recognition. I suspect Jesus saw the same thing in his time.
Giving quietly may not get you as many likes on social media or mentions in the press, but those gifts given with little boasting are so much more impactful because they focus on the work being done and not the giver’s largess. It is not an easy thing to do, but knowing that you did it without fanfare is reward in itself.
PRAYER
Lord, help me to be a generous giver, willing to support good works and not seeking recognition. Quiet giving is its own reward.
Amen
