SCRIPTURE
1 Corinthians 2:1-5
When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.
WORDS OF HOPE
I personally find this passage to be very attractive. I’m very much drawn to the idea that Paul, formerly Saul the Pharisee, comes to the people of Corinth, not as a scholar, but as someone proclaiming the simple example of Jesus. No rabbinical study, no scholarly interpretation, just Jesus.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the scholarly stuff as much as anyone. But I think here Paul comes with a marvelous idea for preaching the love of God to people who have not been exposed to it before. Teach only Jesus. And with a demonstration of the Spirit; which I take to mean, living the example of Jesus.
In this way, Paul is building a foundation of faith that is borne on the basic part of Jesus’ teachings and life. And this is simply to love God with all your being and to love your neighbors as yourself. This is the essence of the Christian life. All other things, prophetic fulfillment, miracles, Sacraments, and rituals all draw their meaning from that simple truth of love. And that simple truth is a feeling, an idea, a way of life that transcends human wisdom. Does not negate that wisdom but is the basis of that wisdom.
PRAYER
God of love, we seek to know what it is you would have for us. Give us that power of understanding and faith that will move us to do those things which we know we should do. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen
