SCRIPTURE
Mark 8.21-25
And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a man who was blind and begged Jesus to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
WORDS OF HOPE
How clearly do you see the world around you? Today’s reading from Mark reminds me of a recent eye surgery that cleared up a condition in my left eye that was similar to what the man in this narrative experienced. A dislocated intraocular lens from a 2003 cataract procedure literally caused me to see people who looked like trees walking around. The post- surgery eyedrops that I’m instilling in that eye also remind me of the treatment Jesus chose to add moisture to the procedure.
The story also suggests that the man had not always been blind since Mark tells us the man’s sight was restored. The Gospels are specific in saying “a man born blind” if this had been a life-long condition. This makes it a story of restoration with which I could also identify as I was longing for a formerly 3D world during two months of monocular vision.
In regard to how clearly we see the world these days, I believe many of us could use some restoration as we sort through the huge variety of interpretations of the truth awarded to us by social media and news outlets. News reports are essentially biased opinions told in a way to convince us of the validity of the reporter’s foregone conclusion. We never hear Jesus’ compassionate and earnest question, “Do you see anything?” We are more likely to hear, “This is what you are seeing.”
But thanks to Mark and the centuries of careful preservation of the Gospel message, we still have the option of always carrying that divine question around with us; the question that invites us to form our own opinions, to examine the situation with our own eyes, not through the lenses of someone interested in promoting their own agenda. Jesus’ straightforward and simple question, “Do you see anything?” frees us from the bonds of manipulation and restores our individual identities. How clearly do you see the world now?
PRAYER
Thank you for the questions that reinforce our faith in you while restoring our faith in ourselves. Amen
