From the Prayer of St. Francis
O divine Creator, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
WORDS OF HOPE
We are still in the 50-day Season of Eastertide, a good time of the year to meditate on spiritual writings as we contemplate the significance of Jesus’ life and sacrifice. From the Prayer of St. Francis, we read: "For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned."
Expanded as a prayer, it might read like this: "Lord Christ Jesus, I choose to live my life as you lived your life; giving love, care, hope and forgiveness." Giving rather than grabbing! The world teaches us to always "get" what we need or want; as if, everything is in such short supply that sharing or giving with others means a real deficit for us. Maybe that's one of the great lessons from the life of Jesus. Although he wandered about without a home or source of income, he constantly gave others the most precious gifts of healing, acceptance, hope and forgiveness from their sins.
And in response to his loving words and actions, the spirit of individuals was changed so that they became "giving by nature". He received their offerings of love in the form of meals and guestroom accommodations in which to rest. That's how God would organize the human economy. Consider the lesson of the miracle of generosity incarnate in the story of the feeding of the 5,000 beginning at Matthew 14.16:
But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
We share with others that which we have. And just like the miracle when Jesus fed the 5000 people from the little that was offered, everyone was satisfied.
PRAYER
Lord Christ Jesus, I choose to live my life as you lived your life; giving love, care, hope and forgiveness so that all with whom I have contact will be satisfied. Amen.
