Psalm 16: 9-11
Therefore, my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
For you do not give me up to Sheol
or let your faithful one see the Pit.
You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
WORDS OF HOPE
Some versions of the Bible translate the word Sheol as Hell. The Hebrew translation is much closer to a place of darkness. The modern vision of Hell was influenced as much by the poet Dante as by the Scriptures themselves.
I much prefer thinking about the present world which with God’s guidance is “the path of life…fullness of joy…pleasures forevermore.” David, the attributed author of the Psalm, rejoices in the path of God. He is encouraged and nurtured by God’s guidance.
For me that is a much better path than worrying about what comes after this life. Jesus is very much of the same mind in his teachings. He is not concerned about life after death, but what to do in this life, how we can bring about God’s kingdom on earth.
I believe the greatest salvation offered by Jesus is that path, a way that encourages grace and charity towards all people. A life fulfilled and abundant not one that is hollow and lacking.
As the Psalmist says,
“You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.’
PRAYER
God, show me your path and lead me with your guidance and wisdom to bring about your realm on earth not tomorrow, but today.
Amen
