Luke 19:1-4
He entered Jericho and was passing through. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
WORDS OF HOPE
In the town of Jericho there was a tax collector named Zacchaeus. He was an official in the Roman tax system with duties to oversee the tariff and excise taxes which were collected by men under his supervision. The people hated their tax burden and those who collected the money for the Romans. Even worse, Zacchaeus was a fellow Jew, and such men were considered traitors, "sell outs", to their fellow countrymen. They had a bad reputation of cooking the tax records and withholding too much for themselves before they passed the revenue on to the Roman authorities.
We don't know how evil Zacchaeus really was, but the townsfolk stamped him with that general assumption. Now Zacchaeus was a little man, probably a bit overweight and very curious to see the special preacher, Jesus, when he came walking into Jericho. As Jesus walked around town to preach and heal, the townsfolk swarmed around him, blocking the pathway, always eager to get close enough to hear and see everything. For a shorter fellow like Zacchaeus, he had no chance to get a glance of Jesus. So, Zacchaeus climbed up into a tree along the path on which Jesus would walk. That added height, up there in the tree branches, would give him an advantage.
Along came Jesus with dozens of people surrounding him. He was preaching to them as he walked, and his attention was focused on those in the crowd. However, Jesus was always on the lookout for those in whose lives God's Spirit was working. In the midst of all that hubbub of people and sounds, he looked up into the tree and spotted Zacchaeus. "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down [out of that tree]; for I must stay at your house today."
Jesus noticed even the little things which were happening around him. Are you sometimes so busy that you find it difficult to look for God-given people or opportunities around you? Sometimes the routine busy things of daily life crowd out the little things in which God wants our involvement. Today, let’s keep our eyes open to the little things in life as well as the major tasks. Pausing to get a glimpse of Jesus changed Zacchaeus’ life. What could it do to ours?
PRAYER
Ever present God, may I follow the example of Jesus and always be aware of everything that is happening around me. Help me to remember that nothing in insignificant to you. Amen.
