READING
Kindness leads to happiness,
And malice leads to misery. - Angelos Michalopoulos
WORDS OF HOPE
During this summer term, our small group has taken to discussing some hard things—beauty, ugliness, sadness, and happiness. Fortunately, we have been together for a long time so a discussion that began with “What is happiness?” sent members thinking rather than running for the door. It may seem like a simple question. Clark Gesner, in his lyrics for the song Happiness from the Broadway musical You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, gives us a list of things that happiness is. He includes hot dogs, new clothes, two kinds of ice cream, finding a skate key, five different crayons. In Gesner’s list are also walking hand in hand, being alone every now and then, coming home, and love. So, what is true happiness?
Things like ice cream and new shoes often create a fleeting moment of joy, but is that the same as happiness? In our group discussions, we have come to realize that happiness is something that comes from within rather than from things we encounter externally. The reality is that in the midst of life as it is today, we have to work hard to be truly happy.
Michalopoulos writes, “Let’s stop waiting for happiness to stumble upon us with force. Chances are it won’t. It is we who must run with all our energy and hug it. We must give sweat, security, and truth to receive happiness. Happiness will be the last thing on earth that will be offered for free. If happiness were free, if it were easy to secure, then everyone in the world would be euphoric, and misery would be extinct. Not only is happiness not free, but exactly the opposite. It is the most difficult peak of our life to conquer, the greatest victory.”
After our group discussed what is happiness, the questions got harder. Do you see yourself as happy?
The first person in our group to respond, did so with a heartfelt YES! This was surprising as this person is living one of the most difficult parts of their life right now, one that most of us would also see as the saddest. They went on to say that though there are some sad things happening, in my heart I have been true to myself, true to the promises that I made, and true to my faith. This, my friends, is what true happiness is. It does indeed take us giving our sweat, security, and truth to be happy. Seeing this person achieve life’s “greatest victory” is an example that I am most blessed to have.
Keep ascending the peak toward happiness. As you take each step, remember that kindness leads to happiness.
PRAYER
Loving God, I believe that it is your desire for your children to be happy. You provide for us the tools necessary to find genuine happiness—faith, hope, love, grace, and forgiveness. Teach me to use these tools effectively while doing the hard work necessary to achieve this ultimate life goal—happiness. Amen.
