SCRIPTURE
Psalm 16.11
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
WORDS OF HOPE
Have you ever said to yourself, “Someday, people well remember I did this!” I think most of us have considered that possibility sometime in our lives, whether it’s a beloved family recipe, an award at the State Fair Craft Show, an important job, or an example we set for a younger generation.
For years, I’ve worked in various avenues of children’s education and often defined myself by the company I kept through various clients including giants like Disney, Warner Bros, Sesame Street, and the Cathedral of Hope. All have made major impacts on our civilization’s way of life, and I am honored to have been involved in their various initiatives.
But, more often than not, when most people glance over my resume, their most common reaction is, “Wow! You did Chuck E. Cheese?” This was unexpected at first, but now I’m used to it. Beginning many years ago, I redesigned Chuck E. Cheese and all his friends and our company drew or built virtually all their puppets, statues, products, games, videos, and graphics for over thirteen years. It was all contract labor and I have very little memories of specific projects. The pizza mouse was just one of a lot of jobs we did in those days.
Then a few years ago, a fan of that era called and asked if we had any old sketches from those days. We did and told them they were welcome to drop by and pick up a few. The next day a van and two cars full of people pulled up in front of the house, and the trickle of fans has never stopped. Last week, three enthusiasts from Connecticut, Kentucky, and Ohio flew in to spend several days with us, sorting through and identifying the chronology of our disorganized stacks of old drawings.
There is still nothing special to me about those old cartoons and puppets, but I am over the shock that anyone cares about them at all. The special parts of them to their fans are the indelible childhood memories they bring back; memories of a time when a cheap birthday party complete with stiff singing robots was magical; priceless days gone by.
The lesson I’ve learned from all this is that how we define ourselves doesn’t matter as much as how we are defined by others. That’s all that we will leave behind us someday. It’s up to us now to respect everything God lays out before us and devote the same amount of care watering the shrubs we plant as we do planting creative and ethical thoughts in the minds of our children. Thanks, Chuck, for giving us that chance!
PRAYER
Caring God, thank you for the countless opportunities you give us to bring a little joy to the lives of others and for the surprises of sometimes learning the differences we made. Amen
