SCRIPTURE
Revelation 14:12 (MSG)
Meanwhile, the saints stand passionately patient, keeping God’s commands, staying faithful to Jesus.
WORDS OF HOPE
There is so much in this one verse from the Book of Revelation! Let’s start with “passionately patient.” To be passionate about something implies having strong ideas and opinions about that thing. I am passionate about many things - my family, my work, and my faith. Being patient means being “able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious.“ Therein lies the hard part. How many of us are passionate, in a healthy and positive way, about problems, or inconveniences, or suffering? I am probably equally as impatient with my family, work, and faith as I am passionate about them. Unfortunately, what this passage is talking about here is not an either/or situation.
The current state of our world has much to teach us about being passionately patient. We can read this passage as telling us that by focusing our energy on keeping God’s commandments and working to stay faithful to Jesus, we will survive these turbulent times. Or, we can interpret it as what we need to do is to rest assured, to rest with passionate patience, in God’s promise to us.
Relying on our own strength, our own endurance, our own ways, will not see us through the dark places in life. Eventually, we will fall apart, be reduced to rubble. We can’t “do life” alone. Life is so much bigger than we are. Our hope rests in the knowledge that Jesus is even bigger than the vastness of the life we see as well as the life that we can only imagine. In his letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul says,
“...Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.”
This is where being passionately patient becomes important. God’s time and our time are often at odds with one another...especially right now. We are all anxious for life to return to “normal.” Passionate impatience has caused some things to move in the opposite direction. We are potentially being pushed to a breaking point. Now is the time to fully rely on God’s commandments and the faith of Jesus. In doing so, all things will again be new.
PRAYER
Loving God, please give to me the strength and courage to be passionately patient during the difficult days. Help me to never forget that my ultimate safety rests in Christ. Amen
