Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice…Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed – in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical – and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental.
-Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison
WORDS OF HOPE
Today’s reading is written by the great German pastor and theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer in 1945, as he awaited execution by the Nazis for conspiracies against Hitler. He continues to define his interpretation of “Stupidity” stating that stupid people are not necessarily unintelligent, but rather convinced of a narrow and specific set of beliefs from which it is impossible for them to shift. The reasons for their commitment vary but are usually fear-based and centered on the infallibility of one belief contrasted to the evil intentions of another.
I can understand Bonhoeffer’s use of the term “stupidity” in his circumstances, amid atrocities we could never fathom. He was surrounded and imprisoned by it. In our label-sensitive generation, we refrain from calling another person stupid since the implication is more about IQ than point of view. To borrow from Harry Potter’s list of spells, I think “Stupefied” might be a more appropriate term, but since one-syllable catch phrases, such as “woke” are on fashion, I prefer to think of stupefied people as “Sold”. They have bought the cultic message of their doctrine or political creed and are closed to any contradictions, logical or otherwise. They have been sold.
This is not a phenomenon of our generation, nor of Bonhoeffer’s. “Sold” people have been demonizing their neighbors and starting wars since the birth of the myths, legends, and narratives we now call history. Jesus spent his entire ministry dealing with countless sold people of the first century. Every one of the Pharisees, Sadducees, High Priests, Roman governors, and philosophers the era had to offer were each sold on the perception that their way was the only way.
How did Jesus interact with the Sold? Did he come up with a clever one-syllable pejorative catchphrase to demean and infuriate them? Did he spend hours writing intellectual, self-affirming discourses to people who were convinced he was blasphemous or crazy? Would Jesus have been concerned about how many likes or huggy-faces he got on Facebook? You already know the answer. Jesus loved them, spoke his truth, and went on his way. Jesus had faith in the power of love and the work of the Holy Spirit. He was sold on it.
PRAYER
Teach us the restraint of Jesus and the strength of his love in our interactions with those who would exasperate us. They are your children, too. Amen
