Matthew 8:23-27
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. A windstorm suddenly arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves, but he was asleep. And they went and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a dead calm. They were amazed, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”
WORDS OF HOPE
Today is National Rollercoaster Day.
I remember one of my favorites and most terrifying rides at the State Fair of Texas was the old Comet Rollercoaster. It no longer stands, but in its day, it was the titan of the midway. Once I was old enough to ride it my father volunteered to take me for a ride. For a ten-year-old the large wooden structure seemed impossibly big. As we left the station, I snuggled up next to my dad and gripped the lap-bar so tight, my knuckles were white. As we started the long slow journey up the first hill, each clank of the anti-rollback cogs felt like a ticking clock, leading me to my doom.
My father on the other hand was relaxed and calm. As we neared the top of the first hill, he turned to me and said, “relax, just go with the flow”. I tried my best and after the first heart stopping drop, I did relax a little and by the end of the ride I was laughing and having a great time.
It amazed me that the secret to enjoying a rollercoaster was to relax and let the ride do the work. After all, it was designed to keep me safely in my seat while providing thrills and occasional weightlessness.
I imagine if the apostles were in a rollercoaster car with Jesus, he would give them the same advice. “Why are you afraid, you of little faith? Relax and go with the flow.”
I believe life is much like that rollercoaster. Ups and downs and thrills and laughter and sometimes fear, but in the end, you return safe and happy if you keep your faith and enjoy the ride.
PRAYER
God of many names, calm the seas of turmoil in my life and let me relax in the assurance that I will be able to get through it with your help. Let me roll into the last station with a smile on my face and a heart filled with thrills and laughter and great memories.
Amen
