Take a deep breath and let it out slowly, and again, a deep breath.
SCRIPTURE
1 Peter 5.1-5
Just as shepherds watch over their sheep, you must watch over all those God has entrusted to your care.
WORDS OF HOPE
Take a deep breath and let it out slowly, and again, a deep breath.
In this passage from Sacred Scripture, Peter reminds us that our experience was his experience and that our ministry is very much the same as his. We are to recognize the important value of those to whom and with whom we minister.
By extension, he reminds us that each person that crosses our path – either personally or professionally – has a message for us and we for them. Listen carefully to those in our circle to discern what God wants us to know from them. God speaks to us through the Scripture, through prayer, through the events in our lives, and especially through those with whom we have an association. Listen. We learn from everyone we meet.
We, in turn, must share the love of God with each of them by our general attitude by example of mercy and compassion. We must do so with humility because we know, from James 4.6, God does not favor those with a proud heart, but “blesses all who are humble with undeserved grace."
PRAYER
O Holy One, thanks for visiting with us again today as we continue to listen to your word. Help us to listen in general, knowing that you are “still speaking” and in all sorts of ways that are simple and understandable. Let us hear what you have to say, not just to your Church, but to each of us personally. Our love must be pure and unsophisticated.
We ask this through your many names, AMEN
