John 15:9-11
As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
WORDS OF HOPE
It’s that time of year when school is ending and communities gather for graduation ceremonies. With these endings, parents are acutely aware that their time with their daughters and sons—at least in the ways they have experienced it for years—is limited. Often, they try—just one more time—to impart their grounding wisdom to their children.
The passage above comes from an extended section of the book of John in which Jesus, knowing his own time on earth is fleeting, reveals his urgency to share with the disciples truths which are elemental to him.
Love is foundational here: As God has loved Jesus-- a love that is intimate, all-embracing, boundless, and eternal, Jesus loves the disciples, loves us. One image that emerges is that of Russian nesting dolls—with God as the largest mother doll, Jesus inside God, and the disciples held inside both divine figures—wholly embraced in love.
It's often hard for us to believe that we are fully enfolded in the love of the Divine, but what an astounding, vision-altering, heart-opening reality we would live if we could receive it.
Then Jesus says, Abide IN me. Not with me—but in me. To abide is to remain, to linger, to stay for an extended time, to dwell. So often we search for the place we belong. Jesus tells us to come home, to live in him.
Then Jesus continues: If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love. While this statement sounds conditional, I think it is not. We are held in love—fully and eternally. But we are “prone to wander,” as the hymn says, “prone to leave the God [we] love.” Following the great commandment: to love God, love our neighbors, and even to love our enemies leads us back home.
This deep abiding leads to great joy—joy that the ever-generous Divine Love desires for us and delights in when we receive it.
This day may we be still and know that we abide in the love of the Divine, our heart’s true home.
PRAYER
For our prayer this day, you are invited to engage in a contemplative practice under the guidance of James Finley of the Center for Action and Contemplation and hear God’s grace-filled and generous “I love you” and to respond with your own “I love you.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CW8jYewLLA
