John 16:22
So, also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
WORDS OF HOPE
The word Joy is used more than 150 times in the Bible, so clearly God has our need and desire to feel joy at the top of the list while happy or happiness is mentioned only 10 times. Joy is described as lasting and satisfies the heart in a unique and marvelous way that temporary happiness lacks.
While attending an adult retreat that was teeming with an abundance of fellowship and love, someone started singing “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy joy, down in my heart, down in my heart to stay”. Even folks who had never sung that children’s song, were soon bellowing it out with amazing spirit-filled glee. Joy through the spirit is contagious and it was evident in our voices as well as in the room.
As believers who walk with the Lord, an abundance of joy, coupled with knowledge and steadfast faith, can truly be felt regardless of circumstances. The spirit-filled believer continues to rejoice amidst troubles. Unlike material pleasures that are bound by conditions, Biblical joy is a noticeably distinct experience.
“Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well with my soul.” This line from the song written by Horacio Spafford,1873, after the tragic loss of his children, shows he found a way to bring peace into his life despite his devastating loss. He recognized that God would bring peace and it needed to begin in him.
Joy isn’t always the absence of suffering. Instead it is finding the presence of God in all circumstances. We can maintain our joy by keeping our confidence in the word of God and not in ourselves. Joy provides blessings for the believer which in turn provides opportunity to share that same joy with others.
