Romans 8: 14-17
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
WORDS OF HOPE
In Romans 8, the chapter begins with how we have all fallen short of the law and desires of God. Therefore, God showed us through Jesus Christ how to be better people and interact better with the rest of humanity. Christ is the roadmap and center for our faith -- He has fulfilled the law and its requirements on our behalf, and we can now be counted as co-heirs of Christ. In Paul’s letter to the Romans, we the transformational power of being adopted in Christ.
Throughout the Romans text, we as Christians are called to stand firm in our identity in Christ. We have been adopted by Christ. This helps us be in community with Christ. In verse 16, it tells us that the Spirit bears witness with our spirit. This brings to light the idea that our Christian identity and experience is an experiential element to our faith. This can take the form of new and changed hearts with new desires. As the old hymn states, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!” Christ even sends the Holy Spirit to confirm our new identities.
In this passage, we are called to be co-heirs with Christ which leads me to think of community. However, our identity in Christ in the body of believers does not mean that we lead a trouble-free life. We will have our burdens, worries and doubts but we don’t have to carry these alone, we can work through them with the body of Christ. Let us share in the good, bad and in-between moments of life.
PRAYER
Most good and gracious God, we give you thanks for letting us be co-heirs of Christ and living into this blessed assurance. That whatever we are going through in life, you remind us that we don’t go through it alone, that we are in a community of believers. Thank you for the transformational ways you work within our lives. Amen.
