James 1.22-25
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at their face in a mirror and, after looking at themself, goes away and immediately forgets what they look like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
WORDS OF HOPE
The writer of the Book of James had much to say about religion in action. Historically, many scholars consider James to have been one of Jesus’ half brothers and a lifetime witness to the ultimate example of practicing, not just talking about one’s faith. His collection of instructions and advice to the early church remains one of the Bible’s strongest reminders of what following Jesus is all about.
James’ life advice is often not easy to follow in an era obsessed by self-worship and the preoccupation with physical beauty and wealth. Little regard is given to the care for those in need and the love of all instead of the select few we consider most powerful or attractive. I have, however, known some and admired people in my life who have been notable exceptions to this societal mold.
One of them lived among what have come to be known as the beautiful people, her own physical beauty being legendary, but whose acts of charity and words of wisdom were even more dazzling. Her name was Audrey Hepburn. She lived in a time when a woman’s worth was measured by her physical attractiveness even more than it is today.
Once, when asked by a journalist, as usual, about the secret of her beauty, she paused for a moment and replied:
"If you want to have attractive lips, say nice words.
If you want to have a loving look, look for the good in all people.
If you want to look slim, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let small children caress you.
If you want to have a beautiful heart, go everywhere with the knowledge that you are never alone, because you are accompanied by those who love you and who you love.”
Audrey Hepburn was not speaking about religion or practicing true faith, but I believe she articulated one of the best definitions of living a Christian life I have ever heard. And I am sure the brother of Jesus would have approved.
PRAYER
May we live the Word, not dutifully recite it. May being Christian not be just who we say we are but inform what we do in our lives every day. Amen
