SCRIPTURE
Luke 1.39-42
Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
WORDS OF HOPE
The Gospel indicates that shortly after Mary had the vision of the angel Gabriel, she left her home in Galilee and traveled south into the hill country of Judea (near Jerusalem) where she visited her cousins Zachariah and his pregnant wife, Elizabeth.
The writer of this gospel doesn't tell us why she made this three-month visit, but there are several possibilities. Maybe, she was sent by her family to help the older, pregnant Elizabeth with her household duties. Maybe, Mary feared her family's acceptance of the pregnancy, and she needed time to think about this strange event while away from their parents and Joseph.
However, God had a purpose for this trip. Living with Elizabeth, she learned the details of what God had done for this elder couple. She learned that the angel had told both of them the answer for these miraculous births: "For nothing will be impossible with God." During that three-month visit, Elizabeth could provide comforting assurance to the young Mary. Without doubt she encouraged the young girl and helped her accept, even welcome, this strange event that was happening in her body.
And when Mary returned to her home in Galilee, she would be able to explain to her parents and Joseph what God had done. Maybe they would understand.
In our present world, God works in and through the lives of other Christians to help guide and bless those in uncertain times. Encouragement and guidance may be some of the most precious actions God will ask you to do for others. As you bless their lives, you also will receive a blessing. That's a God gift, a double blessing. God continues to work in "strange" ways.
PRAYER
Help me to be open to listen to the guidance and advice from trusted friends and to meditate on their message. They may be speaking your words. Amen
