SCRIPTURE
Luke 21: 34-38
“Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Every day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called. And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the temple.
WORDS OF HOPE
I just saw a meme on social media that asked the question, “Back in the day, did you ever party all night and still go to work in the morning?” I would have to answer, “of course I did”. I also remember that some of those mornings were a little more difficult than others.
I’ve always been a “morning person”. I have an internal alarm clock that wakes me at 6:00am no matter what the time zone or how late I was up the previous night. I do my best thinking in the morning and often use that time to write. I suspect Jesus was also a “morning person”. To be able to have the clarity to teach in the Temple after spending all night up on a mountain might be a sign of this.
Mornings hold the promise of a new day, and that is always a chance to start over. Mornings clear our heads of the worries and problems that might have bothered us in the past. A few hours of sleep cleanse our minds and leave us more alert.
Perhaps his warning is about the trap of falling into despair and a spiral of worry that grips us and prevents us from living life to the fullest. If we are trapped in the inertia of fear and depression, we cannot move forward toward living the abundant life Scripture promises.
PRAYER
God who speaks to us from scripture, from prophets, from the mountain top and from the unexpected voices of friends, family and even strangers, let us be alert. Help us to listen. Help us avoid the traps that keep us from hearing your message.
Amen
