SCRIPTURES
Revelation 7:16-17, Isaiah 49:10, and Isaiah 25:8
Never again will they hunger;
never again will they thirst.
The sun will not beat down on them,
nor any scorching heat.
For the Lamb at the center of the throne
will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”
WORDS OF HOPE
The scene from the seventh chapter of Revelation is a beautiful vision of a multitude standing before God. People of all races, backgrounds, and languages celebrate with God, united in worship and praise. Holding palm branches and wearing white robes, which symbolizes victory and festivity, this multi-cultural gathering of God’s people emphasizes the all-encompassing salvation of God and inclusivity of God’s realm.
When my spouse and I came to worship at Cathedral of Hope for the first time together, I saw a similar image. Trans people were finding their way to seat near the orchestra. Same sex couples were holding hands as they walked in. Black and Latinx siblings were sitting in the pews, in the choir, and on the chancel. Deaf persons sat together and worshipped in sign language. Women led worship and men were taking care of children. Some people crossed themselves and worshipped reverently. Others raised their hands at the crescendo of inspiring music.
At the center of the scene from Revelation was God and the Lamb. The same was and is true at Cathedral of Hope.
Verses 16 and 17 of the seventh chapter of Revelation paint a picture of the blessings and protections given to this multi-cultural multitude. Hunger and thirst are gone. Shelter is provided. Living water is shared. Tears are wiped away. God is about the work of comforting, restoring, and bringing peace.
When my spouse and I came to serve at Cathedral of Hope for the first time, I saw similar provisions. Hungry people were being fed, clothed, nurtured, and loved. Persons on society’s margins were being sheltered. The living water of prayer and comfort was being shared. Tears were being wiped away and replaced with laughter. The redeemed of Cathedral of Hope were echoing God’s work of comforting, restoring, and bringing peace.
Many say that Revelation is an allegory and the events are figurative. While much can be debated about understanding this mysterious book, one can see it in this place of worship and service. Thanks be to God!
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the beautiful vision of the great multitude gathered before Your throne, united in worship and praise for the salvation found in the Lamb. As we face our own tribulations, remind us of Your promise to lead us to living water and to wipe away our tears. Strengthen our faith and help us to share Your love with those around us, so that all may experience the hope and grace of Your kingdom. May our lives reflect the joy of being part of Your diverse family, as we look forward to the day we stand together in Your presence. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
