SCRIPTURE
Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
WORDS OF HOPE
Today is the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, known as the day of attonement. It is a day set aside by our Jewish neighbors to devote themselves wholeheartedly to their relationship with the Divine. During this time which is used for repentance, all thoughts are to be centered around this theme for transgressions committed over the past year. It focuses on both individuals as well as the community.
As political parties, families and churches collide over different views or old hurts, this dedicated day to forgive and forget might be an excellent place to start. While Christian churches do not particularly celebrate this specific day to forgive and be forgiven, it might be a good time to reconsider.
As forgiveness has long been a central theme to the Christian faith, taking time to understand the depth of God’s forgiveness towards us can be transformative, influencing how we forgive one another. Forgiveness is more than just a moral virtue; it is the foundational aspect of our relationship with God and others. When we allow ourselves to let go of resentment and thoughts of revenge, it becomes an act which mirrors the blessed forgiveness of Christ. Jesus asked that we to be quick to forgive, slow to take offense, and eager to maintain peace to create unity with others.
A sincere sigh of relief is followed by peace of mind and a light heart when we, like the teaching of Christ, can let go and forgive. It helps set us free from the destructive emotions of anger and resentment. Forgiveness fosters a culture of grace and compassion leading to healthier, stronger relationships with ourselves and others. Forgiveness brings hope and a way to knock down walls of resentment.
PRAYER
Creator God give us the strength to let go of resentment and the courage to seek reconciliation. Just as we have been forgiven, we pray our hearts are guided by Your Spirit to show compassion, kindness, and forgiveness in all our relationships. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
