Luke 2. 16-19
The shepherds hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
WORDS OF HOPE
Finding Purpose
With Christmas upon us let’s consider together what would have come of Jesus if, on the night of his birth, had the unnamed stranger never offered his stable as sanctuary to the homeless? To what degree would this world change if the likes of unnamed ambulance drivers, firefighters, and police officers failed to respond to our calls for help? Has a stranger ever showed you kindness, and did that kindness move your life forward in a way that without it your life might not be the same? History remembers great acts of bravery and heroism, but even more often forgets the small acts of virtue that not only make the great acts possible but change this world the most.
Giving birth to a child is not greater than what it takes to raise that child. Likewise, the greatest thing that Jesus has ever done is found in how He lived His life. Had it not been for how Jesus lived, His death would have gone unnoticed. If His death and resurrection brought us salvation, then it was His life which showed us the way. The countless steps which led to the cross need not be mentioned in the gospels otherwise.
We do indeed look for purpose in our lives. How many of us would prefer to be regarded as great? The world progresses, not by the fulfillment of a grand purpose but because an untold number of strangers act with kindness when many fail to take notice. These unnamed heroes are the ones making it possible for great people to do great things. We act honorably and with virtue because it is in our power to do so. These great deeds make it possible for others to do the same insomuch that an example that would not exist otherwise is made manifest. For it is rare for a person to do that which they have never seen; therefore, let your purpose be found in how you decide to live your life.
PRAYER
Spirit of love,
In this Christmas Season, bless You, for the countless heroes that we often fail to acknowledge. Help us to not live for a specific day or moment but for each day and moment. Allow us to see all that our lives can offer this world. One day, allow the strangers that walk among us to be known and loved as friends. Amen.
