Psalm 111:2
Great are the works of the Lord;
They are studied by all who delight in them.
WORDS OF HOPE
A week before Christmas I was in the ER of Baylor Hospital, the big medical complex downtown branch. My condition was not serious, and I was home by Wednesday afternoon. While there, I met a lot of people without homes and the dedicated people who served them.
Dallas was gearing up for the attack of a devastating arctic cold front and the hospital's hallways were standing room only. People without warm shelter were desperate to get some top-notch medical assistance before the approaching temperature drop.
I was happy to see that Baylor was providing it. One of the nurses explained it was the hospital's policy to turn no person away and to provide information about warm homeless shelters equipped with recovery facilities. There were even regular pickups at the hospital for Salvation Army and other local Charity vans to take them there.
Throughout my long wait in the ER, I witnessed the nurses, techs, and MDs provide the same courteous attention to each person, including the woman behind the curtain to my right who took turns laughing hysterically, cursing the person who was caring for her, and singing hymns at the top of her voice. Behind the curtain to my left was a corporate president accompanied by a note-taking secretary and his personal assistant. Both patients were treated as if they were the most important person in the facility. They were.
The situation was resplendent with Christian metaphor, yet I estimated that less than half of the medical professionals were Christian. The Baylor staff is more diverse than the UN. But, on that week before Christmas, I witnessed the greatest volume of acts of Christian charity of my life. The light of God was shining through every one of those angels of mercy.
The situation drove home the fact that "Christian" is both a noun and an adjective. One describes who we say we are and the other describes who we actually are to our neighbors. In this brand - New Year, we will have plenty of opportunities to be both.
PRAYER
Make me the action verb of your love.
