Luke 19.41-44
As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
WORDS OF HOPE
Today’s lectionary reading recalls a time in Jesus life much later than the birth story we anticipate this time of year. It addresses, however, the similarities in the stories: those who did not recognize the coming of God on earth; the ones who refused to see the light.
Years before, in a lowly Bethlehem stable, the light of Joseph’s lantern had been lighted. It was not a search light to set a signal in the sky; nor did its brightness fully illuminate all that was there. Deep shadows still appeared among the corners as animals gathered nearby. In fact, its brightness was out- shown by the Babe asleep on the hay.
The poet Richard Wilbur wrote: "A stable lamp is lighted whose glow shall wake the sky; the stars will bend their voices and every stone shall cry. The child through David's city shall ride in triumph, later be forsaken and yielded up to die. Now as at the ending, everyone low is lifted up. The stars shall bend their voices and every stone shall cry, to praise the baby by whose descent from God the world is reconciled"
This Christmas season, each of us may exit the night's darkness and enter that lantern’s glow. Kneeling before the baby, we offer words of love and praise. We gaze in wonderment at this gift of God's redeeming love, and in that glow, our hearts are warmed and spirits reborn. As you prepare to go into the world this Season, will you ask to light your travel candle from the sparkling flame of that stable light? Can you carry some of that blessed light with you back into your daily world? Jesus taught: "You, who are my followers, are the light of the world. No one after lighting the lamp puts it under a bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your God in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)
PRAYER
In this coming Christmas Season, may we receive to glory of the light shining through that babe in the manger and ourselves become the light of the world. Amen
