Luke 23.43
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
WORDS OF HOPE
As opposed to Jesus’ hopeful words in today’s Bible verse, “I’ll see you in hell” is a phrase all of us have heard for years. It was used in “The Empire Strikes Back” spoken by Han Solo before taking off to look for our lost Luke Skywalker, for those friends who might expect my usual pop culture reference. (Is there a Hell on the planet Hoth?) The subjects of Heaven and Hell have been significant sources for conversation for as long as I can remember; Heaven being thought of generally as the location of our afterlife after we “good folks” die. Oh, it’s nothing personal and I don’t mean to offend, but the “good people go to heaven” thing is a works-oriented part of my conservative upbringing, teachings about a particular Heaven. Hell of course is the other place. The same thing applies here; it’s where some of us hope the bad people go. Not sure I like the power surge in judging folks. I let go of thinking about Hell as an afterlife place some time ago, just because I don’t like thinking about such a place. Isn’t it wasted energy? Let alone having a need for authority to condemn anyone. Please note I live in Texas where our summer temperatures reach triple digits…which is hell enough for me.
Why do we need a Heaven or Hell? I could explore plenty in this writing about the history of each concept; where they came from and why we have them is enough to fill books to buy on Amazon. More important to me is their use in today’s language. I want justice. I want the “bad people” to be punished for their sin, me included, but don’t we punish ourselves enough? I admit I want the reward of having lived this life as well as humanly possible and when I die, is it wrong to want to arrive at something better? To be reunited with lost loved ones in a magical place without suffering, pain, or sadness. That brings me to pop culture reference number two. “It’s not a place you can get to by a boat or a plane. It’s a place beyond the moon; behind the rain…Do you really think there is such a place Toto?” Of course, the Wicked Witch of the West created her own Hell out of this Heavenly place in Oz. Don’t we do the same?
The question is, how do we make our own “Heaven on Earth?” Whether in word or deed, if we do the best we can, isn’t that enough? In his book, The Four Agreements, Miguel Ruiz tells us in one of the rules, ‘always do your best,’ but only your best in that moment. You be the judge. How do we reach a place to lessen each other’s suffering; to create a happy space even if it’s only for a few minutes? I know what I do is usually not enough. I hang on to my idea of an eternal Heaven. I can’t prove its existence, but some days the idea of an Oasis in the desert gets me through the rough spots. At the end of the day, if you can visualize a version of that for yourself, maybe the Heaven you have created in your mind will shine through for others to see. Today, I’m going to see about creating a little bit of Heaven on Earth for a neighbor. What do you do?
PRAYER
Open our eyes to see Heaven in the Creation around us.
