John 17.21
…that they may all be one…
WORDS OF HOPE
Today is National Just One Human Family Day. It was started in response to a song “We Share Just One Planet: that was written by two music teachers in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York. It is a day set aside for humanity to consider the promotion and development of healthy relationships as neighbors who live in harmony as one human family. It is a day meant for people to understand the need for peace and harmony and community because “we are sisters, we are brothers we are neighbors, we are all friends, and we are all one human family living in open planet.”
If you look at the shield of the United Church of Christ you will see the words of John’s Gospel emblazoned on it. Back in 1957 when the UCC was formed from some rather diverse churches coming together; the vision of Just One Human Family Day was already there.
It comes from the prayer that Jesus prayed over his disciples just prior to his crucifixion. So, in some ways this prayer, this hope, was one of the foundational aspirations for the believers. It is hard and these times, as perhaps it has been throughout the history of the church, to find humanity truly living up to this dream. We can all point to individuals who have worked for this dream. We can all see groups that have worked for this dream. But as a whole humanity, we find it hard, if not impossible to live up to this dream.
So today I ask myself, and I ask you, to consider what small ways, and what large ways, we can work towards the hope “that we all may be one”.
PRAYER
Loving Creator, we ask as Jesus did that you protect us from evil, sanctify us in truth, and ask that Jesus is in us as You are in Jesus, as we are in You. Help us to see you in others so that we all may be one.
