SCRIPTURE
Psalm 119:2
Happy are those who keep (observe) God's decrees, who seek God's will with all their heart.
WORDS OF HOPE
The writer of today’s Psalm has found his path to true happiness on his relationship with God. How about you? Most of us sincerely desire to live in harmony with the One who created us and whose agenda for us we know to be best. A person who claims to be in relationship with God can't be happy or content with their lifestyle if they do not live in harmony with God's desires for them. Two individuals cannot walk together if one disagrees and takes a different and opposite path! Yet, that is how some Christians try to live their lives.
Some people tend to carry with them a set of unwritten rules for their Christian lives; Sunday Rules and Weekday Rules. To them "Sunday rules" apply sometimes, but rarely if it requires real effort or a break from the lifestyle of their friends and associates. (Hey, they’re doing it and they’re good Christians. Why shouldn’t I?) This Psalm reminds us that happiness (inner peace) comes from a stable relationship with God in which the individual always keeps in mind the divine principles for a right lifestyle. Stability applies to both Sundays and weekdays, in making choices we know in our hearts to be right. That lifestyle is always in harmony with the wishes of God.
Just as those two people, who seem to be walking together but argue about which pathway to take, we begin to lose our way when we disregard what we know is the path of God. We cannot walk in joyful harmony and peace either with God or with our inner selves; that part of us that knows the right way. We must seek to learn God's choice... and seek to hear God's voice, if we hope to walk through life in-step with the desires of God and find true happiness in the process.
PRAYER
Lord God, quiet my mind and open my heart to receive your words of guidance. May your Spirit teach me to develop a more vibrant spiritual life which is surrendered to you. And may I walk hand-in-hand with you this day. Amen.
