SCRIPTURE
Leviticus 23:39-44
Now, the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall keep the festival of the Lord, lasting seven days; a complete rest on the first day, and a complete rest on the eighth day. On the first day you shall take the fruit of majestic trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days.
You shall keep it as a festival to the Lord seven days in the year; you shall keep it in the seventh month as a statute forever throughout your generations. You shall live in booths for seven days; all that are citizens in Israel shall live in booths, so that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel live in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. Thus Moses declared to the people of Israel the appointed festivals of the Lord.
WORDS OF HOPE
Today is Hoshana Rabbah in the Jewish tradition. It is the final day of the feast of Sukkot, a seven day festival that combines harvest festivities with a remembrance of the times the Israelites lived in tents or booths in the desert after being freed from the Egyptians. Many Jewish families will build a booth in their yard; as will some temples. Tradition says that meals will be eaten in this booth as a reminder of the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering in the desert.
It is also a time for remembering those who do not have as much of a great harvest.
But as the last day of this particular festival, it is also a day of rejoicing. It celebrates God‘s goodness in providing the harvest that is being celebrated. And it celebrates the finality of no longer having to live in booths. Metaphorically it likely represents the “harvest” of the Israelites from enslavement in Egypt.
So, today would be a good day to spend some time thinking about the blessings that God provides and remembering that not everyone necessarily enjoys the same. Reflect on those things from which you have been freed.
Reflect on those things that still hold you in bondage. Rejoice in what you have and in the Lord who provided.
PRAYER
Great Provider I thank you for all that I have and have been given. The bounty of this life that You have given is not simply in food. We thank You for those who have grown and harvested it. We thank You for Friends and the bounty of companionship and fellowship that we have according to your blessings.
