SCRIPTURE
Esther 8:1-2
On that day King Ahasuerus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews, and Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was to her. Then the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. So Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.
WORDS OF HOPE
As a child, I grew up celebrating the story of Esther during the Jewish holiday of Purim. It is a sort of Jewish Halloween when children all dress up as characters from the story of Esther and go around getting candy and hamentashen a triangular shaped pastry filled with sweet poppy seeds or fruit.
I remember my mother making me a costume of King Ahasuerus and she researched it down to the shape of the crown. Most kids wore pointed crowns resembling those worn by European royalty, but in ancient Babylon crowns resembled bowl shaped affairs made of gold. So, she found a suitable plastic bowl and spray painted it gold for my crown.
When I showed up at our synagogue’s Purim party I got a lot of ribbing about the bowl on my head. I tried to explain that it was more authentic than the pointed ones other boys were wearing, but they didn’t buy it.
Rather than remove it and submit to their teasing, I continued to wear it proudly, knowing it was authentic. Authenticity, that’s what the story of Esther is about. She wins the king’s favor and exposes herself as a Jew to save her people. She lived authentically and in doing so saved a nation.
I suspect learning that lesson helped me in my later life when I came out as gay to my family and then to the rest of my friends. Today, I do not shy away from identifying as “queer”, a term I reclaimed back in the 1970’s. It fits me well since my sexuality is not easily defined. It is authentic to me just like that plastic bowl of a crown.
PRAYER
May we be brave like Esther and live our lives with authenticity and grace. In doing so we might not save a nation but may save someone who is struggling in their own life. May it be so.
