SCRIPTURE
Romans 3:21, 23-24
The righteousness of God has been disclosed... since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they [those who believe in Jesus] are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.
WORDS OF HOPE
Most of the English translations of the Bible are generous in words and phrases that seem remote or even antique in our daily vocabulary. The Gospels as well as the letters of Paul are generous in their use of words such as “righteousness” and “redemption.” Jesus is praised as the Revealer of the Divine, Redeemer and Lord.
A lot of the emphasis in the writings is on the death of Jesus rather than the lessons he taught us during his life. The early church had several letters of Paul which continually reminded them that Jesus' death had freed them from the bondage of sin.
I like to think of redemption being more in the nature of what we would define as rescued today. Colossians 1:13-14 tells us God has "rescued” us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of God’s beloved Son, Christ Jesus, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sin."
The Apostle Paul gave special emphasis to Jesus' death (and shed blood) as the ultimate sign of divine forgiveness for our separation from God's holy desires for our lives. However, I ask that you to consider the entire span of Jesus' life of devotion to the divine ministry, not just his bloody death, as the great redemptive sacrifice which Jesus experienced in order to rescue us from our separation from God. That’s truly how we define righteousness.
It was Jesus' steadfast determination throughout his ministry to live according to the will and purpose of his Abba. His example offers us the opportunity to receive the forgiving embrace of God as we joyfully live every day of our lives in that assurance. He didn’t just rescue us from some sort of misery after our deaths. Jesus is the Redeemer of all who seek the embrace of God every day of our lives.
PRAYER
Redeeming God, inspire us to live our lives as Jesus lived his, knowing we are part of your family. May they know we are the sisters and brothers of Jesus through every interaction we have with others this day and every day.
