SCRIPTURE
Job 32: 5-10
But when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouths of these three men, he became angry.
Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite answered:
“I am young in years,
and you are aged;
therefore I was timid and afraid
to declare my opinion to you.
I said, ‘Let days speak
and many years teach wisdom.’
But truly it is the spirit in a mortal,
the breath of the Almighty[b] that makes for understanding.
It is not the old[c] who are wise
nor the aged who understand what is right.
Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me;
let me also declare my opinion.’
WORDS OF HOPE
I have worked in LGBTQ+ rights and alternative sexuality organizations since the 1970’s. I am often a speaker at events and conventions. As I age, I find a lot of people begin to look at me like some sort of sage of wisdom, hanging on my words for some nuggets of truth. Then again sometimes I feel like a fossil who is more of a curiosity than anything else. In reality, I don’t feel old except for the occasional stiff joint.
What keeps me going is seeing younger folk who are picking up the mantle and finding new ways to make their activism relevant. Like Elihu said, “Listen to me; let me also declare my opinion.” Those younger voices are better than any energy drink ever made.
PRAYER
May we remember to listen not only to the old and wise, but the young and energetic, for God speaks through both. Amen.
