SCRIPTURE
Matthew 24.29-35
Immediately after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from heaven,
and the powers of heaven will be shaken.
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
WORDS OF HOPE
No very cheery words. Falling stars, a darkened moon, trumpets and winds, oh my!
If I came from an evangelical background, I would point this passage as proof that the end times are near. Except this was written almost 2000 years ago. What happened? Was Jesus wrong?
Luckily, I came from a Jewish background and the Holy Scriptures in most cases are not taken as a mere narrative or a storybook or literal predictions. Scriptures are a theological work and meant to be taken seriously and studied to tease out the underlying great moral truths for my life today, not used as a crystal ball to predict the future.
What I hear in these words attributed to Jesus is an urgent call. A call to get busy because everything could end at any time. We only have a finite number of days on earth and if we follow Jesus, we have a lot of work to do.
Our great mission is to bring Heaven to Earth and that means feeding the hungry, healing the sick, freeing the oppressed and all the other work we sometimes call social justice. It means not waiting for some magical time when everything will be perfect, it means gradually making changes to work toward that goal. That is the whole secret to living an abundant life in my opinion. If I approach life not as a game to be won, but a journey towards something better, the idea of some kind of surprise ending is not as frightening.
PRAYER
Holy One whose name cannot be spoken, grant me strength to continue my journey and wisdom to seek the path you lay before me. Amen.
