SCRIPTURE
1 Kings 19.11-13a
Then God said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it…
WORDS OF HOPE
When Cathedral of Hope became a member-church of the United Church of Christ (UCC), the denomination had a slogan that is still my favorite: “God is still speaking” which is accented by a big graphic comma, reminding me of my favorite Saint, Gracie Allen, who said "Never place a period where God has placed a comma."
This logo symbol indicates an open and evolving conversation. It’s an appropriate slogan for anyone who might question how God communicates to us.
It’s a simple statement which also makes me wonder, how does God communicate to me or you in our daily life? In a strong wind? In an earthquake? In a forest fire? It seems only natural that we would presume that the still, small voice spoken to the Prophet Elijah is among the top 10 ways this happens. Throughout my life I have felt the presence of God’s voice to me in a number of ways.
Often one of those still-small-voice moments comes to me in movies. Years ago, when I saw Star Trek: Into Darkness, I was inspired by the character development; the growth and shifts in certain traits, giving emotionless Vulcans compassion and Captain prone to bar fights the ability to experience sacrifice for the good of the many. God whispered to me, “You can change…” After this, I had to see the prequel again. The previous reboot was full of examples of compassion and how, if we’re open to the opportunity, we can allow ourselves to become conscious of each moment to actively participate in our future lives. God whispered to me, “You can do it…”
Years earlier, when I saw Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner’s character heard whispering voices telling him to act, without knowing what the outcome would be to his actions. He dutifully listened, despite the close family and friends who were highly suspicious of his strange ideas and even thought he might be losing his sanity. He didn’t know why the voice wanted him to plow the corn and make way for a baseball diamond, yet he had to ignore his instincts believing it would happen. God whispered to me, “Have faith.” Well…sort of, anyway. I think the phrase was “If you build it, they will come,” which basically says the same thing.
How is your conversation with God going? The still small voice is always there when we settle down and listen. We don’t have to wait for the wake-up call of the next earthquake, forest fire, or please, not another pandemic. How does God communicate to you? Sometimes, we can just relax and go to a movie.
PRAYER
God, you are always present for me. Guide me to learn how to be present for you.
