SCRIPTURE
Matthew 19.16-22
Then someone came to him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother. Also, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “I have kept all these; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.
WORDS OF HOPE
It seems many people’s life philosophy is based on a line from the movie Wall Street in which the lead character, Gordon Gekko says, “Greed is good!”.
That was a fictional character, but I suspect it’s not far from what some billionaires believe.
Recently I heard a story about Charles "Chuck" Feeney, an Irish American businessman. He amassed billions in his lifetime and recently died with very little to show for it, except that he gave it all away to causes and people who were in need. In total Feeney gave away $8 billion through his Atlantic Philanthropies foundation to further health, education, reconciliation and human rights around the world. Most people have never hear of Feeney. His name is not on any buildings or organizations.
I do not know if he gave everything away because he was religious, but I can definitely say he was righteous. His work was done with little fanfare and followed the teaching of Jesus pretty much to the letter.
We all can only aspire to die as rich in spirit as Chuck Feeney.
PRAYER
God, May I use what gifts I ever been given for the benefit of others. May I work to bring your kingdom to earth as it is in heaven.
Amen
