Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
For everything there is a season... a time to be born and a time to die. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
WORDS OF HOPE
Let’s talk about "life assurance". No, I didn't mean life IN-surance; I'm referring to the divine gift of assuring hope which is part of the Christian's living salvation. Today’s Scripture reading is from the Old Testament's wisdom literature and is a concise and accurate assessment of all our lives: “a time to be born and a time to die."
Death comes to all humans and its arrival often is viewed as the greatest of all human fears. It is a fear which terrorizes the life of many, and sometimes incapacitates it so severely that it prevents a healthy mental outlook even in good times. As a physician and personally as a cancer patient, I have witnessed the devastating effect of death's approach on the lives of individuals and their loved ones. However, as a Christian I am assured by Jesus' words spoken to Lazarus' sister: "I am the resurrection of life. Those who believe in me, even though they [physically] die, yet they will live [eternally], and everyone who lives and believes in me will never suffer [eternal] death." (John 11:25-26)
A part of the Christian's living salvation is the absolute assurance of these words from Jesus. We can be certain that at the moment of physical death and our first step into the eternal transition that we will be met by the loving words and outstretched hand of Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul reminded the early church at Corinth that: "This mortal body must put on immortality", and when that happens the saying will be shown absolutely true "Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where O death is your victory? Where O death is your sting? But thanks be to God [that our living salvation] gives us that last victory through our Lord Christ Jesus." (I Corinthians 15:54-57) That is our Life Assurance guarantee given by our living salvation!
PRAYER
Lord Christ Jesus, I give thanks that you offer me a promise of salvation, deliverance from fear, and the blessed gift of assurance in your eternal love. Renew and remake me by the spiritual growth opportunities you will offer me each day as we journey together in my living salvation. Amen.
