SCRIPTURE
Psalm 19:14
May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.
WORDS OF HOPE
Last month was National Poetry Month. An editorial ran in the Dallas Morning News lamenting the fact that we needed such a month. I am happy that we take a month to shine the light on poetry and the incredible artists who create it. I am more upset that we have to have a day set aside to promote decency. Today is that day, National Decency Day.
National Decency Day was started in 2019. Its goal is “to bring decency back into everyday conversations and actions.” I find it disturbing and sad that we need a day to remind people about decency. In a world where we say anything is possible, saying and doing things to others that lack courtesy and decency also have become possible. Sometimes it seems that decency isn’t even expected anymore. How sad is that?
I recently had a hospital stay. During my twenty-four hours there, I encountered many people - surgeons, nurses, various kinds of techs, transport personal, food service, and others. Every one of those people works hard. I was surprised by how much each of them lit up when I said “good morning” or “thank you” or “have a good day” or if I inquired as to how their day was going. It made me wonder if these people are treated with decency throughout their workday. Every day, they are seeing people who are not at their best so I suspect that often translates into being treated with a lack of decency.
The sad thing about there being a lack of decency in our world is that treating others with decency does not ask that much of us - listen, give effort to truly understanding others, and be compassionate. How have we, as a society, lost these abilities? It is our job as followers of Christ to be examples of decency in the world. We need to listen as Christ listened, we need to offer understanding as we are offered understanding and forgiveness, and we need to live with a compassionate heart and mind. Jesus shows us exactly how to do these things in his words and actions. He is our example.
PRAYER
I pray that as I go about my day, I will have a heart and mind that are open to listening, understanding, and being compassionate to all those that I encounter. Amen
