From the writings of Corrie ten Boom
I prayed to dispel my fear, until suddenly, and I do not know how the idea came to me, I began to pray for others. I prayed for everyone who came into my thoughts - - people with whom I had traveled, those who had been in prison with me, my school friends of years ago. I do not know how long I continued my prayer, but this I do know - - my fear was gone! Interceding for others had released me!
WORDS OF HOPE
Corrie Ten Boom was a Dutch watchmaker who became one of the 20th century’s best known Christian writers and public speakers. She worked with her sister Betsie ten Boom, their father, and other family members to help large numbers of Jewish people escape from the Nazis during the Holocaust in World War II. She was later captured and sent to a concentration camp herself, a place where she found God and began her career as a writer of Christian inspirational Christian writings. She had much to fear in that camp and plenty of reasons to pray for herself, but most of her prayer life was centered around the needs of others.
Prayer was the guiding force in her life. She was famous for saying, “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?" The steering wheel of your car allows you to guide that mass of steel, glass, rubber (and plastic) down the road and toward a destination. In contrast, you can drive thousands of miles before you have to dig out the spare tire to overcome a roadside emergency. From the minute you start driving lessons, you are told to "keep your hands on the wheel", to control the steering wheel until you're safely parked. It should be part of your extended driving arms...part of every moment you're in the driver seat.
Is your thoughtful communion with God, your steering wheel, part of your moment-by-moment life? Life is filled with events at home and work which are like bad road conditions, high-speed and congested traffic where you want "hands on the wheel". God is the best "steering assist" that you can ever want, but you must keep prayer communication intact.
Often, such prayer is very informal, simply a question seeking an answer or better judgment for a situation. Your car needs a steady source of energy to keep running; likewise, to enjoy a happy life, you need a steady prayer connection to God's loving guidance.
PRAYER
May I never make prayer a spare tire emergency in my life, but the consistent power that guides my thoughts and directs my efforts to being concerned about the needs of my neighbors.
