From The Prayer of St. Francis
Where there is doubt, I'll sow faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light.
WORDS OF HOPE
In meditating on the Prayer of St. Francis, we can find wisdom that is appropriate to each Season of the church calendar. In considering today’s reading, we are empowered to discover a whole list of possible Lenten disciplines that can build the spiritual lives of others as well as ourselves.
Let’s modify these words and add our personal task to them.
• When others doubt God's constant love and presence, may I speak to them of my confidence in God.
• Where there is a sense of hopelessness, let my assurance of divine promises be an encouragement to them.
• Where there is a "dark-loss" in someone’s spirit, O God, use my life to bring loving light to them.
• Where there is sadness or mourning, let your living presence through me lift their spirits in joy.
In this time of political and social chaos, of a Covid challenge that is still plaguing much of the world, our international scene is awash in doubt, despair, dark uncertainty and sadness. This prayer reminds us that each of us, empowered by God's loving guidance, can become a remedy for these soul destructive forces.
Some people with whom you interact may tell you that they experience these "soul hurts" and seek help. While others may obscure their need with a simple "I'm okay" which gives you an easy way not to help. As you interact with others in your life, be mindful of the diagnostic wisdom of God to make you aware of their true personal and spiritual needs. As you enter such human interactions, be conscious that God may ask you to help heal the soul hurt of the other person.
And if you accept that task, God will empower you with the wisdom and resources to be a divinely gifted angel to their life. If you enter these human interactions and play psychologist or social worker, your helpful guidance may fail. However, if you meet the needs of others with a reliance on the wisdom of God, you will be able to convert their hopelessness into assurance, their doubt into confidence, their spirit’s darkness into divine light, and their sadness into true joy.
PRAYER
God of comfort and light, make us instruments of your faith, hope, and light in a world that is desperate to experience your Grace.
