Matthew 9:32-34
After they had gone away, a demon-possessed man who was mute was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the one who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were amazed and said, “Never has anything like this been seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees were saying, “By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.”
WORDS OF HOPE
It always amazes me how some people jump to conclusions in the absence of more information.
That is what it seems the Pharisees were doing when they heard of Jesus healing someone, they believed was demon-possessed. Immediately their minds went to “it must be the Ruler of Demons”
I guess they had never heard of Occam’s Razor. It is defined as “when presented with competing hypotheses about the same prediction, one should prefer the one that requires fewest assumptions.” In a far simpler version, it was explained to me as “when you hear hoofbeats don’t expect Zebras unless you are in Africa.”
I am guilty of this myself. I remember once a friend of mine and I were in the backyard of his home. It was late at night one October eve and as we looked up in the sky, we saw a formation of glowing orbs. They were in a “V” formation and moving fast. Then these glowing dots reformed into a straight line silently and with astounding speed. We both immediately began talking about these as UFOs. We had seen alien spacecraft flying over Dallas!
As we watched breathlessly in the still of that October night, we heard a sound. It was an ethereal murmur, steadily growing louder. We were awestruck, imagining the space aliens who were piloting these ships. Then the sound became clearer, “honk, honk, honk”.
What we had seen was the white bellies of Canadian geese flying south. The lights of the city reflected off their white feathers creating the glowing orbs.
I believe the Pharisees could not explain Jesus’ actions and immediately assumed demons, instead of finding that the afflicted people were healed by their faith not magic. They thought they had an exclusive on such faith and Jesus didn’t fit their rigid belief system.
They saw UFOs instead of geese.
PRAYER
God of mysteries and miracles, let me find the beauty and joy in your works without creating complicated explanations. Sometimes the simple answers are before me, waiting for my God-given intellect to realize them. Amen.
